of hangtag: What's
the origin of Bloomers, a 19th century invention? Elizabeth
Smith Miller took the initiative: she designed roomy pantaloons to free women
from the confining dress styles of the day. Then her cousin, suffragist Amelia
Jenks Bloomer, popularized the new garments through her monthly newspaper, The
Lily. They became known as "Bloomers." Elizabeth
Cady Stanton and others leading the struggle for women's rights made a point of
wearing Bloomers. They put their Bloomers away, though, when the popular press
obsessed about their underwear and ignored more substantial issues of women's
emancipation. The
struggle for women's rights especially reproductive rights continues.
Will Bloomers make a comeback in this 21st century? They make both a fashion statement
and a political statement:
This is my garden. This is my bloomin' body. adapted
